Question by Amie G: All parents of children with autism,I need your opinion!!!!!!!!!!!?
Ok I know that this is the place that I can go find honest answers that come from the heart. So please DO NOT HOLD BACK!!!Give it to me whatever way it comes…So I was watching an interview on cnn(If you go to the yahoo main page it should be there)with Jenny McCarthy talking about how her son Evan has “recovered” from autism by bio-meds:
-vitamins & supplements
-changing diet
-removing Canada
-detoxing the body
and she swears that 1 thing that was a trigger to Evans autism was his vaccines.I have heard many mothers swear to that as well. The medical community says that we as moms are looking for something to blame that is why many mothers turn to blaming the vaccines. Here is what I want to know.
-#1 how old was your child when you started to notice a problem?
-#2 was it around the time of any vaccines?
-#3 was your child “normal” before vaccines?
-#4 have you tried diet changes? If so what?
-#5 how long you did it take before you saw results on diet?
-#6 did the diet work at all?
-#7 Do you believe your child has or can recover from autism?
-#8 if you haven’t at least tried the diet change what are your reasons?
#9 If you could do it again would you choose to vaccinate?
#10 How has autism changed/touched your life?
#11 what is the hardest part for you as a mother?
# 12 did/does your child have either diarrhea or constipation?
#13 how many have been to a “DAN” dr.?
#14 how many have done vitamin b12 shots?did they work?would you recommend them?
I know that this is a lot of info so I hope that you guys don’t mind but I have been doing so much research and ALL opinions are welcome, thoughts are as well.I am not in any way judging your methods I am just looking for similarities. Please all I ask are no rude comments!!!!Thank you.I look forward to reading this later.

We have done a year long homeopathic detox and probiotics esp. lactobacillus acidophillus and transfer factor. We saw big improvements going the biomed route.
1+2) we noticed at 15 months right after the MMR he was regressing and different. Middle son noticed at a few months old.
3) yes, the oldest was neurotypical prior to vaccine injury up till 15 months old, confirmed by video tape viewed by several neurologists, psychologists, and developmental docs, including those at Kennedy Krieger. Middle son, no I don’t believe he was ever NT we just didn’t notice it the first few months.
4) no we haven’t stuck to a GF/CF diet.
5)n/a
6)n/a
7)I do not believe in recovery from autism. I do believe that a degree of healing can take place, and the place on the spectrum isn’t static and can improve with therapies and intervention. For anyone to lose the dx, I believe they were mis-dx in the first place. My son the oldest some docs say he is losing the dx. I don’t really believe that. 8) my son was improving so much with other intervention that we just never got to it. The diet is a big commitment for the whole family.
9) I have chosen not to vaccinate my other sons at all. So yes, I regret having my oldest vaccinated albeit partially because we stopped at 24 m.
10) Autism envelops every aspect of my immediate families lives.
11) The hardest part is ignorance by other people especially family who insist that he is shy.
12) Constipation
13) Yes we have been to one DAN doc, and plan to do another that came rcommended by the neuropsych. 3 y.o. hasn’t been yet, he still isn’t talking much. We also haven’t tried the DMG with him, oldest son had mixed results with speech improvement on it.
14) Yes, have done vit B shots. I’d recommend them because they work and won’t hurt. They will help boost the immune system and cut down on the amount of illness.
My oldest has gone from moderate autism to mild autistic features with very unlikely quotient scores on the GARS less than 1 percent and other autism raters.

Firm believer of a biomedical approach to improve level of functioning in autism. Have read ‘Louder than Words’ Jenny McCarthy’s book and support what she is saying.

Doing things or giving your child things without your permission?

We are expecting our first child. This will be my inlaw’s first biological grandchild. They are extremely excited. It’s not my father inlaw I’m worried about. It’s my mother inlaw. She’s a nice person in general but she is a control freak. I have watched her in action with her 10 year old granddaughter (by her adopted son). She has had a lot of influence on that child’s life. Her parents haven’t been together for many years. I honestly think she feels sorry for her and the way she thinks she’s showing her love is by letting her misbehave, talk back and get away with highway robbery.

My mother inlaw is already worried that I won’t let my baby spend the night with them when he’s born. That’s a no brainer. Unless it’s some unusual circumstance that can’t be prevented (single parent who needs daycare), why in the world would I allow a newborn baby to stay anywhere overnight? Why would she even be worried about that at this point. She lives an hour away.

I’m also concerned about her doing things as she sees fit. For example, feeding him solids at an early age as she did my husband. Using weird home remedies for teething, constipation, crying, etc. It seems that all grandparents or older people in general tend to think that because you have never had a child before they know what’s best. In some cases that’s probably correct, but not in all cases. When in doubt I will ask, but otherwise my husband and I will be making the decisions regarding our baby.

I am also worried about my mother as well. She doesn’t live in the same state, but spends 6-8 months out of the year here helping take care of my grandmother who lives 8-10 minutes away. She is also one to take matters into her own hands, so I can easily see this happening with her to. You may think it’s as simple as telling them not to do it … but we’re dealing with two older women (my mother inlaw is 65 and my mother is 57). I could see them sneaking behind my back and doing things. If I say something I could see both of them being very offended.

Has anybody dealt with this?

if your child were 4 or 5 months old, would you give them prune juice or something of the like to help with constipation?

The UK has been officially cast as the most protective parents for their children. But while front gardens are empty and parents spend their time with their eyes glued to their children, where is it that children are getting the horrible moral constipation that has caused the majority of the 21 killings this year?
21 teenagers have been brutally murdered this year. 21! What are we lacking as parents?

My son was formula fed as an infant and never had constipation, allergy problems or anything else because of formula. Do people just say this out of ignorance or is it because they are formula feeding haters that just like to run down us moms who either are or did formula feed our kids? It’s not like breastfed children don’t ever develop these things or have allergies or problems. My friend’s little girl has severe allergies and asthma and she was breastfed. It’s not like anyone is pointing at her and saying “oh, you breastfed so she has problems now” (and no, I don’t think that is why she has those issues, I think it’s just hereditary in her case). Why do people do it to formula feeding mom’s? To me it is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard- blaming formula feeding for things that happen to nearly EVERY baby on occassion.
