Go to www.funpottytraining.com for more FREE potty training videos Q Your 3 year-old is potty trained with regard to peeing in the potty but he refuses to poo in the potty ie He takes a poo in his underpants or demands a diaper. A: Your child obviously has bowel control and is very close to being completely potty trained. However; he is uncomfortable sitting on the potty and going number 2 which probably relates to constipation. Sometime in the past when he was potty training he took a hard poo in the toilet or potty and thinks it’s related to sitting on the potty and not his diet at the time. His diaper brings him comfort and allows him to stand in a private place and bear down when he’s ready to toilet. So what can you do to get your child comfortable enough to poo in the potty? When dealing with any situation it’s best to have a plan of action. Get Your Child To Poo In The Potty Plan: 1. Talk to your child about pooing in the potty but NOT when he needs to go poo – Ask him why he doesn’t like to poo in the potty – Tell him that every body poos in the potty, mommy, daddy etc – Explain what constipation is and why it happens – Tell him that poo in a diaper ends up in a landfill and is harmful to the environment 2. Take your child and show him there is only a couple of diapers left so he needs to learn to poo in the potty (keep conversation light, remind him your there to help him, if after a day or two it turns out he’s not ready then just act like you found A diaper

Try an over the counter laxative. Read the directions and make sure you really really need it. Used incorrectly, it can hurt you. Dehydration is one danger.

Question by bue: Child with Extreme Constipation?
Went to emerg. Child complaining of severe abdominal pain and vomiting.Took x ray of child’s abdomen. Doctor said that he was full of gas and feces. Gave enema and lactulose-sent home. That was 2 days ago and child has had 2 more enemas since, lactulose everyday, along with only high fiber diet. He has had no bm’s without the enemas. After enemas are given his abdominal pain increases to the point that he is very close to passing out. When he eats, he complains of the pain being almost in between his rib cage(upper). Says its tender to the touch. Gets winded and weak. Unable to move; walk very well with out buckling over in pain. Can this all be caused from constipation or possibly something else with the stomach?

I would go to a doctor. If you don’t get an answer that makes sense and works, go to a specialist. This sounds serious.

Question by SuePayne: Is there a home remedy for constipation of a child?
My 6 year old son has trouble using the restroom sometimes. Some weeks he’ll go 2,3 & 4 days without being able to have a bowl movement and then when he finally does go he usually strains and it’s larger than normal for his age. I know he’s a growing child, but this is ridiculous. I’m wondering if there’s an easy remedy. I hate strong over-the-counter laxatives because those can cause so many other problems. Can I make him like herbal peppermint tea? Or mix syrup or honey in a cup of water. I need some ideas, please. The doctor says there’s nothing wrong with him, but I don’t like how he has so much trouble just using the restroom. He says it gets so difficult that he doesn’t want to try #2 when he’s at school. That part I know can’t be good on a young boy. Thank you for any helpful advice or tips

Prune juice or grape juice are safe natural ways. Make sure he gets some fiber. get him to eat raisin bran for a few days, it always helped me when I was pregnant.

Question by Ashley-Austin and Ava’s Mom: Has anyone given their child Miralax for constipation – long term?
My son was born with a *condition* where he will most likely suffer from chronic constipation for the rest of his life. The only thing I’ve found that eases this is Miralax – he gets half a cap full every night. I’ve recently read a few things that say long term use of Miralax in children is not good – but I can’t find any details!?! I’m afraid that I may have done long term damage to my son but I just wanted him to be able to poop!! Has anybody ever used this for a long period of time or have you heard of any long term negative side effects??
He had a *condition* that was surgically corrected at birth, but he is left with lifelong chronic constipation. I guess condition isn’t the correct word – I just don’t want to get into all the details…
