Question by I Am The Walrus: What’s the best way to deal with constipation in a 6 month old baby?
She is really struggling to do the business, and when she does the stools are really hard. What tends to cause constipation and what naural remedies are there?

I used to gently but firmly massage my son’s tummy when he would get constipated. Circular motions – I think it’s clockwise if you’re facing them. Also, the prune baby food worked great too!

any formula with iron or soy formula will cause constipation…while they all have some iron…look at the % on the ingredients…some are lower than others…have you considered trying prune juice…or apple juice…either of these would help also….if your son is young….try diluting it 50/50 with water….the other suggestion I would have would be to buy some Karo (white) syrup and dilute it with water…any of these suggestions should help your poor lil guy! Be careful not try to many different things at once…his tummy will be an uproar! I guess my favorite of all the above was the Karo syrup diluted with water. You can do this at any age…it won’t take much of it. a couple ounces….I would do it every day though if your gonna continue the formula with iron. Best of luck to ya!

Question by thesongthatilike: What is the best way to treat constipation?
My child is mentally challenged and always had a problem with constipation to the point of impaction on several occasions. It was eventually resolved while in a nursing home. Now that he is at home, the meds, colace and dulcolax?, aren’t working. I hate to do it, but I think I may need to resort to giving him an enema. This was always traumatic for him, but I don’t know what else to do. I can’t let this go on it only gets worse. What is the best enema to give and how do I do this now that he’s an adult?

My daughter had the same problem. We tried doing a fleet enima that is sold at many pharmacy but, in the end it was a small amount of ivory soup mixed in warm warter that did the trick. Because Ivory is natural it had not harmful effects. It was my Pediatric doc’s suggestion.
