In the month of november my just turned 3 year old pooped twice. He’s had constant problems since he was born with constipation. Doctors have no idea. He’s gone 12 days now without a poop. He’s puked twice in the past 4 days. Doctor put him on colace and lactulose (together) 1 tsp twice a day. Today is the 2nd day on the meds, and still no results. If he doesn’t poop by tommorow night we have to go back into the ER. Any idea how long it SHOULD take for these meds to kick in??

Listen to Amanda. She is right on. I don’t know how much he weighs, but depending on his weight, you might call the Dr. and see if you can increase the dose just a little, maybe 1/2 teaspoon or 2.5mls (cc’s) Have they tried infant glycerin suppositories?

Colace is just a stool softener and not a laxative. Lactulose should do it but give it a little more time. I would say wait until tomorrow. Push fluids on your little one and make sure that he is really active. That will help. Poor little boy…..that would be awful!!!!! Keep an eye on him though. If he starts vomitting alot, that could be indicative of a bowel obstruction which is dangerous.
