if your child were 4 or 5 months old, would you give them prune juice or something of the like to help with constipation?

I may, but I think that using prune juice to deal with constipation is over hyped. Really it just provides extra liquid which can ease the constipation, and not much more. Prunes, yes, are a good way to combat it, but prune juice doesn’t have the fiber, nor really much of the prune to be as beneficial as people think. I’d find a different way to deal with the constipation like massage or a suppository.

Constipation was not an issue until we started solids – the solids actually *caused* it, and a year later it is still a problem.
My nephew was very constipated at 1 month, though, and the pediatrician advised my brother and his wife to give him pear juice. Call your child’s pediatrician and ask for their advice – they may want to see him to find out the cause.

Yes you can give prune juice to the child. Also alot of time apple juice will help. You can add 2 teaspoons of light karo syrup to the milk and it will also help when your baby is constipated. You can go to the pharmacy or walmart pharmacy and they have a baby laxitive that you can give also.

I remember when my 1st was constipated I would get all kind of old wives tale advice about how to correct it. Whenever I tried that stuff, it always seemed to do more harm than good. Prune juice seems harsh for a babies stomach (to me). I would probably be more inclined to try water or simply waiting it out a little. If I were truly worried I would contact the pediatrician before trying a home remedy.
I will never forget when my mil gave my daughter a bottle that was part formula and part prune juice (w/ out my consent). She was miserable! She exploded in her diaper and then was still miserable.

They do not recommend juice at that age. You could offer water or even thin out the formula a bit. I have also heard of the thermometer trick, where you just take the temp rectally, its supose to trigger the poop reflex, LMAO! If you feel that prune juice is needed then water it down. Baby might not take it at all..

you can check with your ped. I know a lot of people who do but you never know with allergies. They had us give Morgan pedialyte for a reaction to the rotovirus vaccine (vomiting) and didn’t mention no to the apple flavored and she broke out in a bad rash and her eye swelled within minutes of like two sips. This wasn’t even real apple juice. I guess you never know. I heard babies can go up to 10 days without a BM. Try the thermometer trick (leave in for 30 sec).. maybe a suppository.. etc first. Call your ped and ask for suggestions.

Yes, prune juice is fine to give at that age- use either the gerber brand or if using regular prune juice, dilute just a bit with water . Just a couple of ounces of the juice should do the trick. Also pear juice works well sometimes too.

I breast fed my daughter so she never got constipated, but some of my friends who used formula gave their babies some water or watered down juice (even apple juice works). Juice gave my daughter horrible diaper rash though so I guess like everything else, it’s different for every child. Good Luck.

i would rather do that than use supositories i would think- try some water first though- (just a tiny bit) maybe water teh juice down A LOT
mt 13 month old still cant handle juice, he gets diarrhea and a rash EVERY time

If you are already starting with the baby foods Gerber has prunes in a baby food. I did that with my daughter and she loved them and she was so much more comfortable.

  12. neato197 says:

I wouldn’t do anything unless my baby seemed uncomfortable…then I would probably call my ped. and see what he would recommend.

Watered down prune juice or apple juice will help ease constipation. If you are really concerned call the doc.
