My daughter gets constipated 1-2 times a month, she will go with out having a bowel movement for sometimes as much as a week. When this happens she will not eat! All she wants to do is sleep, very fatigue. I have had to many Doctors, they give her the “quick fix” I’ve been given advise from A-Z and no change. I have changed her diet completely, and still this continues to happen. Also she has this thing with her toes, its dry and cracked and no amount of cream seems to take this away, I wonder although doubt these two issues are related. Anyone who has seen these things before, I want to go to the Doctor asking for curtain tests to be done, instead of asking whats wrong, cause I’m getting no where.

My sister was hospitalized once for this, so I know it’s scary. After that, mom gave her an enema if she didn’t have a BM at least every other day. Our aunt gave her an enema daily when she visited their home.
You need to make sure she has lots of fiber and liquids in her diet. The drop in her appetite after a week is a result of the impaction. The fiber and liquids have to be pushed daily. You can also see what loosens her up some. Mom used to make stewed prunes for my sis, or make her drink prune juice. When sis got older she found licorice did the trick for her.
You didn’t tell us what the “quick fix” is that the doctors use, which you SHOULD ADD to your message in an addendum.
There may not be any relationship between the dry, cracked skin. Just get cracked heel lotion for her to put on at night and then wear socks to bed.
Do =NOT= go to your doctor with instructions of what tests YOU think the doctor should run. That’s RUDE! You are NOT a physician. Your job is to ASK the doctor to find what is wrong. Your job is to NOT TELL or INSTRUCT the doctor how to do the doctor’s job!!! If you are told to have your doctor run specific tests … and you go to your and do this, you are insulting your doctor.

These things may have to do with a food allergy, or slight intolerance to something(food). You might try having a food allergy test. Try giving a prune/other fruit juice blend a few times a week, that helps my daughter, she has had constipation off and on for a while, but this helps as well as pear juice mixed with water, and pears seem to have a lot of fiber.

For the constipation i would give her a tablespoon of castor oil. STAY AT HOME after u give it to her she will go within about 15 mins. Also once u give her the castor oil make sure she drinks a lot of fluids. You can find castor oil at any pharmacy in your town Walgreens or even a locally owned one. Hope this helps. God Bless :)

I’ve no idea if they’re connected, all I can say is you have to do whatever’s necessary to make sure she’s doing the doo every 1-2 days, and the safest chemical crutch you can use is glycerine suppositories.

When you modified her diet, did you include lots of fiber, vegetables, fruits or whole grain. This will sometimes relieve the problem.
Its certainly not good for her to go for a week without relief.

Just to add: digestion problems and skin issues can be very much related. Not really one causing the other, but they appear together.

she sounds really dehydrated..increase liquids and electrolites so she can absorb the liquids better. increase fruit, water, jello, fruit juices.

There are tests that can be done. My daughter had one. It’s where they make them drink a contrast solution and wait an hour and then take x-rays of the digestive track in 15 minute intervals. This way they can see if the digestive track is working properly. Sorry I cannot remember what the test is actually called, but my daughter had it done about 4-5 years ago.
I just got an e-mail yesterday about foods that help with constipation I’ll copy some and add them to this.
For the dry and cracked skin. Is it anywhere else other than her toes? Like on her scalp?
Some foods at add to her diet.
    Apples
    Beans
    Artichokes
    Blueberries
    Cabbage
    Carrots
    Peaches
    Prunes
    Wheat germ
    Wheat bran

If your doctor isn’t doing much, tell him you want her referred to a specialist. Going a week isn’t good for anyone, much less a child. My concern is the dry skin and fatigue. Those three combined may be related, not so much one thing causing another, but one major health problem causing all three. She needs a thorough exam,m demand one, it’s your right as a parent.
In the meantime incorporate a lot of high fiber food and juice in her diet, and use cocoa butter on her feet to prevent cracking. If at any point she seems to be in sever pain, take her to the hospital just to be safe.

MY son was constipated when he was 1 year old. The situation was a little different but the doctors were not helping. Eventually he had to be hospitalized for dehydration and way too many enemas. You need to ask the doctor to do x-rays to make sure she isnt blocked up. Have you tried getting her to eat prunes? I’ve heard that if you dip them in chocolate, like raisenettes kids will eat them. Your daughter should also be taking some sort of stool softener. If your doctor wont help you then get a 2nd opinion. Its not ok for your daughter to be so sickly 1-2 a month. Get her help before it becomes a bigger problem.

Ya know, there might be a connection. My daughter used to have terrible constipation and has very dry patches on her arms and legs. I never put the two together.
The only thing I’ve found to work for her is putting flax seed in her yogurt every morning. Also, lots of water. I’m sure you’ve tried it all, but I just wanted to mention it.
My cousin’s son also has a problem with constipation, they had to do a bunch of testing for his G.I. track…
Its a very strange thing, and its so hard to see them when they can’t “go”. My daughter acted the same way, she just wanted to lay on the couch. It doesn’t seem like a big problem until you’ve had a kid go through this. I’ve been there, my heart goes out to you and your daughter.
Try getting a referral for a Gastro specialist. Good luck.
